Sheriff's Office Detention Department
Lieutenant Dean Herndon: 970 826-2312 The Moffat County detention facility is responsible and entrusted with the care and safe keeping of all prisoners, both sentenced and those awaiting trial, that are incarcerated in the facility. The new jail went on line and was operational 07-19-01. The jail has 84 adult beds and 8 juvenile beds. We also have the ability to operate the county work release program out of our facility. The new facility was designed for indirect podular supervision. This means that the master control is centered in the middle of the housing area allowing for minimal constant supervision. The jail was designed with the latest in technology, not only with security in mind but also keeping us in stride with the rest of the corrections world. We have the latest in automated finger print equipment and the capability for video court, not only with the Moffat County court system but state wide with the department of corrections. Our Goal:It is our goal to provide a safe and secure environment for prisoners and the public. Also, we need to provide the necessary transportation of prisoners to Division of Corrections, Court appearances, and medical facilities. Our staff consists of:
In 1999 we created a program that allows citizens, non-certified in law enforcement, to assist the Sheriff's Office in juvenile watches, detox watches and transports. TAC Program:Moffat County Sheriff's Office is a member of Transports Across Colorado (TAC). TAC enables us to have prisoners transported to and from our facility to any other facility at a lower cost than if we had to do all our own transports. The mission of the Transports Across Colorado (T.A.C.) is to co-operatively move prisoners between facilities in the safest, efficient and most cost effective manner. History: The counties in attendance quickly agreed that they could contact one county by telephone to set up multiple transports with as few vehicles to agencies as could be arranged. Jefferson County was the county picked to coordinate the transports state wide. Quarterly meetings are scheduled at different counties of the state in the attempt to contact every law enforcement agency to show them that their costs can be reduced. The Department of Corrections is now fully involved in these efforts and sends representatives to every meeting to discuss any problems that may arise concerning them. All detention officers have mandatory training that includes:
The original jail was built in 1964 and housed 20 prisoners. The addition was built in 1984, adding space for 20 more prisoners as well as an on site kitchen facility, which allows us to prepare all our meals on site. The facility is a linear remote podular style jail. We are now in the Public Safety Center which houses 84 prisoners and can easily be expanded to house 104. Check out the progress of the Public Safety Center. Jail information:All inmates are issued an inmate hand book upon entering the facility that details inmates rights and responsibilities. Visiting hours are from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Special non - contact visits at other times must be approved in advance by one of our Sergeants. No contact visits are allowed other than with attorneys and Clergy. |
