Fire Management and Suppression

The Colorado State Legislature passed 30-10-513, Sheriff in charge of Forest or Prairie fire statute. It describes the duties for the Sheriff, Undersheriff and Deputies to control and extinguish prairie land fires in their respective counties.

The Moffat County Sheriff's Department Deputies receive training yearly in fire suppression and arson investigation. The Department responds to approximately 12 prairie land fires yearly. The Sheriff's Department also supports the Dinosaur National Park, the Bureau of Land Management and the National Forest Service in their efforts in suppressing prairie land fires throughout the region.

This department is responsible for responding to wildland fires occurring outside of the existing fire districts. This department is also responsible for assisting the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service and the National Wildlife Service in managing wildland fires that are multi-jurisdictional in nature.
